Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin had a stomach tumor removed today.

Spokesman Joe Shoemaker says the senator is recovering at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

SHOEMAKER: And the good news is that there’s no sign of malignancy inside the tumor that was removed, and there’s no sign of cancer anywhere else in his body, not in his stomach or his esophagus or any of the surrounding tissue.

Shoemaker says the tumor was discovered during a routine check-up a couple of weeks ago.

A full biopsy of the tumor will be done and completed later next week.

Durbin is expected to be released from the hospital today or tomorrow. Shoemaker says Durbin plans to resume a light schedule in a couple of days and then a full schedule next week.
