West Siders Take on Police ‘Abuses’

As some Chicago aldermen battle for the names of city police officers most often accused of excessive force, some West Side residents upset with cops are taking a different tack.

A 35-year-old Puerto Rican artist who doesn’t want his name broadcast spent much of the last week leafleting Humboldt Park storefronts and calling community leaders. He says it’s hard enough living amid gang violence.

ORGANIZER: We also gotta be scared of the police either pinning drugs on us or locking us up for no reason. It’s like the neighborhood is under siege by the police department.

His work led about three dozen people to a meeting Tuesday night at the park’s field house. They included attorney Blake Horwitz.

HORWITZ: So who wants to handle the kids getting strip searched? Different scenario, just getting their names…

They don’t want specifics of their plan broadcast, but the elements include videotape and lawsuits.
