Governor Pat Quinn has signed a law that aims to boost Illinois farmers. The idea is to increase demand for locally grown food by requiring state agencies buy from local producers. The legislation is, in part, the effort of the Illinois Local and Organic Food and Farm Task Force. Earlier this year the task force released a study that found an estimated 96 percent of the food people in Illinois consume is produced in other states. Jim Braun, a farmer and a task force coordinator, lays out what this legislation means for our farms and dinner tables.
