Throughout this election cycle, as tense conversations on race continue to heat up, we’ve noticed something at Latino USA: we’ve been getting more and more listener emails along a certain theme.

“NPR’s Latino USA, why can’t this kind of news just be labeled news? Why can’t you put it on NPR Caucasian?,” wrote one non-fan.

Or, another wrote just last week: “Why are you guys so racist?”

More and more, the act of talking about race is being labeled as racist and divisive itself—and this is especially true in the conservative media, where “PC-culture” is frequently derided.

So, we decided to call up our friends at NPR’s Code Switch to talk about what’s driving this gap in how people on different sides of the political spectrum think about racism. Maria Hinojosa spoke with Gene Demby, co-host of the Code Switch podcast.
