Why Has the State Comptroller’s Race Pulled In $8M In Donations?

The somewhat-obscure office of Illinois state comptroller is the only statewide spot on the ballot where the ongoing war between Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan gets expressed. Usually, state constitutional officers run in non-presidential years, but this is a special election: Judy Baar Topinka died shortly after winning the 2014 comptroller election, and Rauner appointed Republican Leslie Munger to a short term. Susana Mendoza is the Democratic candidate.
