We’ll travel to Elkader, Iowa, a town that’s grappled with an identity crisis since September 11, 2001. The reason? Elkader is the only town in the entire United States that’s named after an Arab Muslim. After 9/11, some locals sought to change the city’s name and forgo this association. We’ll meet an openly gay couple who went the opposite route, opening an Algerian-American restaurant on Elkader’s Main Street. Also, in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, we devote this week’s Global Notes to some wild music from Turkey.
