After Independence: Ghana

The charismatic leader of its independence movement was Kwame Nkrumah. After World War Two, a new constitution allowed a legislature elected by popular vote. Nkrumah's party gained a majority, he became Prime Minister, and Ghana won independence from the British.

George Ayittey is Professor of Economics at American University and he's author of the book Africa Unchained: The Blueprint for Development. George is Ghanaian and he's helping us take a look back at Ghana 50 years out from independence.

Jerome began by asking George to tell us about life in Ghana under British rule.
