A new book challenges Western conventional wisdom on the root causes of sectarian violence in the Middle East. Nader Hashemi is director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Danny Postel is assistant director of the Middle East and North African Studies Program at Northwestern University. They’ve co-edited the book Sectarianization: Mapping the New Politics of the Middle East. The book solicits submissions from numerous top scholars. Hashemi and Postel will join us to explain their belief that Middle East or Muslim strife did not originate from primordial hatreds, but rather from a patchwork of complex factors that would evolve into sectarian conflict.
