Illinois is expected to receive an additional $15 million in funding to combat the opioid crisis across the state, after receiving $43.5 million in September 2018.

And the funding, from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,  comes at a needed time.

Earlier this year, a report from the National Safety Council found that Americans, for the first time, are now more likely to die from an opioid overdose than a car crash.

Morning Shift checks in with Dani Kirby, director for Substance Use and Recovery at the Illinois Department of Human Services.

If you or someone you know is experiencing opioid use disorder or other substance use disorders, call the Illinois Helpline for Opioids and Other Substances at 1-833-2FINDHELP or visit HelplineIL.org.
