Marvin Rees became the first democratically elected mixed-race mayor in Europe when he took over City Hall in Bristol, England in May 2016. Of Black African-Caribbean descent, since coming into office, Rees has prioritized tackling Bristol’s housing crisis, improving transportation and early health interventions. A member of the Labour Party, Rees also spoken out about the “embarrassing” economic and racial inequality in his city. Originally from Bristol, Rees studied in both the U.K. and U.S. and has worked with faith-based organizations and in public health. He was also a broadcast journalist for BBC Radio Bristol. Rees joins Worldview to talk about his experience in politics and journalism and what it means to be Europe’s first mixed-race mayor.
