BRAID/WORK

African Hair Braiding is a tradition that goes back centuries, and yet, it’s up to the minute in terms of fashion. And an art project called BRAID/WORK is speaking to the history and aesthetics of handwork and to braiding culture. We’ll heard more about it from the two collaborators behind BRAID/WORK. • Fatima Traore, Malian-American professional hair braider, teacher and entrepreneur, and • Chicago-based artist Sarah Beth Woods. Then, in memorium, we revisited host Richard Steele's 2013 conversation with Chicago soul vocalist Reginald Torian, Sr. He passed away earlier this week at the age of 65. Finally, we heard an excerpt of Ayana Contreras' interview with Mr. Torian, as well as lots of music. The Barber Shop Show airs live on Fridays at Noon on Vocalo 91.1FM. You can also stream live at vocalo.org. In addition, the show rebroadcasts on Saturdays at 9am on 91.1FM and on Sundays at 3pm on WBEZ 91.5FM (art print by Sarah Beth Woods, Photo by Helen Maurene Cooper)
