Cuban Visions,” a new film series, starts in Chicago on Thursday, January 24, 2019 and runs through November 2019. Presented by Americas Media Initiative and Full Spectrum Features, the film expo will introduce Chicago moviegoers to scarcely seen works from Cuban filmmakers through short fiction, animation and documentaries. Cuban Visions will touch on many issues, including racial and economic inequity, gender rights and identity. Worldview will contemplate these films and related issues with two experts. Mónica Rivero is a Cuban journalist and editorial director of OnCuba News. Odette Casamayor-Cisneros is associate professor of Latin American and Caribbean Cultures at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. Her forthcoming book is On Being Blacks: Challenging the Hegemonic Knowledge Through Racial Self-Identification Processes in Contemporary Cuban Cultural Production. Joining them is documentary filmmaker Alexandra Halkin. She’s director of the Americas Media Initiative. Harkin will tell us why she believes these “rarely seen Cuban films will challenge U.S. audiences’ long-held misconceptions about past and present Cuban reality.”
