It’s been more than a quarter century since the now-closed Michael Reese Hospital shut down its adult trauma center.

That means South Side residents have been without an integrated-care facility — equipped to take care of everything from car crashes to strokes, sports injuries and gunshot wounds — for more than 25 years.

That changes on Friday when the University of Chicago plans to open the doors of the city’s newest adult emergency department in Hyde Park.

Joining Morning Shift to discuss the new center are Dr. Selwyn Rogers, the director of the trauma center, and Dr. Tom Spiegel, medical director of emergency medicine.
