A former police chief for the Lake County, Indiana sheriff’s department was killed yesterday in a bike riding accident south of Lafayette. Gary Martin, who stepped down as chief four months ago, was killed along with an Indiana State Trooper.

Both men were participating in a charity bike ride sponsored by the Indiana State Police. A semi slammed into a truck that hit a group of bike riders.

The 63-year-old Martin served as chief under Sheriff Roy Dominguez. This past weekend, Martin attended his daughter’s wedding.
