In May 1997, Chicagoan Tom Derdak, with a group of health care professionals and other concerned citizens, came together to do something about HIV/AIDS and other health problems in Africa. He would start the Chicago-based not-for-profit Global Alliance for Africa (GAA). The group partners with local grassroots groups in creating small businesses that provide support for orphaned children, young adults and their families left victimized by HIV/AIDS.
Derdak joins Worldview to reflect upon the last 20 years of serving African communities. He’ll be joined by Kenyan Hip-Hop and break dancing artist, Victor Onyango Odhiambo. He partners with GAA’s Therapeutics Arts Program and is currently in Chicago for a series of events in collaboration with GAA, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College Chicago.
