The Indiana Gaming Commission has suspended payments to a company that was supposed to spur economic development in Northwest Indiana.

East Chicago Second Century’s funding comes directly from the casino boat operating in the city. The for-profit company was created 12 years ago to help develop housing. It’s collected more than $16 million from the casino.

Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter says Second Century has done little with the money.

“The company that was not accountable to anybody clearly had many opportunities over the past several years to show that they were spending money that would produce economic development value in East Chicago. They’ve not taken advantage of that opportunity,” he says.

The state’s gaming commission voted Thursday to suspend future payments to Second Century.

Carter wants the privately-owned company to open its books for public scrutiny. Second Century is fighting that move in court.
