By Steve BynumWBEZ film contributor and director at Facets, Milos Stehlik, interviews the world’s great filmmakers and film artists on Worldview. Today’s master class is with famed cinematographer and director Ed Lachman. His latest project is Wonderstruck.
Directed by Todd Haynes, the film is based on Brian Selznick’s popular and critically acclaimed book. The main characters, Rose and Ben, are children from two different eras. Rose longs to find her movie-actress mother (Julianne Moore) in 1927. After getting struck by lightning in 1977, Ben pursues his long-held wish to find his father. Both wish their lives were different, yet their plights unfold symmetrically, in black and white, and in color. Critics laud the film for its visual approach.
Also a film director, Lachman’s previous collaborations with Haynes include, I’m Not There, Far From Heaven, Carol, and Mildred Pierce. He’s also worked with many acclaimed directors including, Werner Herzog, Robert Altman, Steven Soderbergh, and Sofia Coppola. Wonderstruck is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
