1. Border patrol agents deployed to Chicago to enforce immigration laws

A hundred border patrol agents and officers have been sent to Chicago, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The move comes as the Trump administration cracks down on so-called sanctuary cities, which limit cooperation with federal authorities over immigration law enforcement.

The border patrol officers will assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents “in order to enhance the integrity of the immigration system, protect public safety, and strengthen our national security,” according to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. [WBEZ]

2. The spread of coronavirus in the U.S. appears inevitable, health officials warn

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today it could be a matter of time before the deadly respiratory virus spreads in the U.S.

“It’s not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses,” said Nancy Messonnier, a top official at the CDC.

The warning comes as the number of confirmed infections worldwide has climbed to 77,658, with 2,663 deaths. [Washington Post]

Meanwhile, U.S. stocks continued to see losses today as fears grow over the virus’ impact on the global economy. Yesterday was the worst day for U.S. markets in two years. [AP]

And Dick Pound, a senior member of the International Olympic Committee, said organizers could cancel the Summer Olympics in Tokyo if the coronavirus outbreak is too dangerous. [AP]

3. What to watch for in tonight’s Democratic presidential debate

Seven candidates will debate tonight in Charleston, S.C., just days before the state’s primary. The debate takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. CST and is hosted by CBS.

Will all the candidates gang up on Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has taken the lead so far? How does former Vice President Joe Biden handle Michael Bloomberg and Tom Steyer, who are threatening his lead?

Will Sen. Elizabeth Warren give another forceful debate performance? And will Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg seek a rematch from the last debate? Click the link to see what NPR is looking out for in tonight’s debate. [NPR]

4. Sooo, about that snow …

The Chicago area might not see as much snow as previously believed, according to updated forecasts from the National Weather Service. Chicago could see up to 5 inches of snow between tonight and tomorrow, but more snow may hit south of the city.

5. Illinois’ marijuana industry sounds like it has a job for anyone

Are you looking for a job? Because I, um, I’m definitely not. … Yeah, definitely not looking to leave WBEZ.

But apparently Illinois’ now legal marijuana industry has a variety of different jobs that go beyond being a so-called budtender who slings weed behind a pot shop counter.

The Chicago Sun-Times took a look at some of the white-collar workers who are working in the industry, from physicians to college instructors.

“I didn’t ever think cannabis would ever be legal in medical school,” one doctor told the Sun-Times. “I never thought I’d be using cannabis as a medication.” [Chicago Sun-Times]

Here’s what else is happening

  • The Cook County judge overseeing the Jussie Smollett trial once kept a reluctant Oprah on jury duty. [Chicago Sun-Times]

Oh, and one more thing …

Sometimes I’ll gasp really loud in the newsroom and people will think it’s about some big piece of news. But it’s usually about movie or TV show trailers that were released.

But this time I gasped at the news that there will be a trailer released on Thursday. I’m talking about Jordan Peele’s “spiritual sequel” to Candyman, a 1992 horror film that took place in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green. You can find a teaser trailer here. [Nerdist]

WBEZ’s Natalie Moore looked at the cultural significance of Candyman and how the sequel returns to a transformed Cabrini-Green. [WBEZ]

Tell me something good …

What’s your favorite place to go on a date?

Scott writes:

“My favorite date in the city is meeting up with my wife after work and going to the Art Institute. We wander around for an hour or two, and then get dinner somewhere nearby.”

And Zoe writes:

“Guthrie’s tavern near Wrigley Field. They have a great selection of beers and offer a cozy vibe offsetting from the pricey sports bars nearby. They also have a ton of board and card games. They don’t have many food options but you can bring in food from outside.

“Another I like is Sparrow. It’s a cocktail bar in Gold Coast. It is small, a little hidden, and has almost a speakeasy vibe. Nice to go for one cocktail before you see how the rest of the night goes.”
