Through October 15, 2018, Oxfam America, an anti-poverty NGO, is driving a food truck from Washington, DC, to Austin, Texas, in a campaign called “Behind The Barcodes”. The food truck is in Chicago today, and will stop at two Whole Foods stores. Oxfam states the truck will “raise awareness of the human suffering behind the food on supermarket shelves—even at socially-conscious Whole Foods”. When the truck reaches Austin, Oxfam will deliver to Whole Foods’ national headquarters over 200,000 signatures from people in all 50 states, and from 108 countries. The petition will also go to the chain’s parent company, Amazon, in Seattle. Along the way, the food truck will stop at Whole Foods stores and college campuses. Oxfam is asking that people “join…in advocating for the millions of workers who toil in unsafe conditions and earn poverty-level wages”.  We’ll talk about the human rights issues behind the campaign with Oliver Gottfried, senior campaign strategist at Oxfam America. He oversees Oxfam’s food campaigns.

Worldview reached out to Whole Foods, and its parent company, Amazon, for comment, or a written statement. Neither responded to inquiries.
