A vocal opponent of the new Cook County sweetened-beverage tax says he is not running for county board president. Richard Boykin, a Democrat, has been the loudest critic of Board President Toni Preckwinkle in recent months. He’s attacked her for pushing the sweetened-beverage tax and for laying off county employees when a judge blocked the tax. Boykin flirted with the idea of running for board president, but announced Thursday that won’t happen. Boykin says his focus now is seeking the repeal of the soda tax at the board’s next meeting on Oct. 10.
