WBEZ looks to win its fourth consecutive crown in Chicago’s Bike To Work Challenge. The 2019 fun happens June 14-28. Every year, Chicago-area organizations and businesses track their bike miles and trips to win prizes and bragging rights, as well as to help our ecosystem. It’s a Worldview tradition to kick off the Challenge by “talking smack” to our fellow not-for-profits, exploring the importance of biking to sustainability and giving WBEZ staff a chance to get their bikes repaired! Over the hour, we discuss the competition with Kerry Holsinger from the Active Transportation Alliance, the organization that produces the event. Bike To Work Challenge Team Leaders Carter O’Brien (Field Museum) and Meredith Stepien (Adler Planetarium) share their secrets to motivate their co-workers. We also chat with a real estate agent who gives home tours by bike. And we talk with “Global Activism” favorites Mikela (Keke) Pinkney and Anna Henschel from Working Bikes. They give bicycles new life by redistributing them as vehicles for empowerment to countries like Malawi. Finally, we call France to check in with Chicago cycling legend George Christensen as he scouts out the climbs for his sixteenth Tour de France. He has biked everywhere, from Oman to the Philippines and all points in between. We even hear about George’s latest domestic quest to tour all 1,687 Carnegie Libraries.
