We made it to another weekend and in peak summer, no less! Today on the show, we talk all about what to watch and eat this summer. Our guests are Shilpa Uskokovic, food editor at Bon Appetit, and Shirley Li, staff writer at The Atlantic covering the entertainment industry.

What to watch:

How to With John Wilson season 3 (July 28)

Documentarian John Wilson narrates this absurdist, comedic show on HBO where he observes New Yorkers and attempts to give advice. “It’s almost a travel show, but you go on John’s little adventures and he meets the wackiest characters,” Shirley says.

Problemista (August 4)

Problemista stars director, writer and comedian Julio Torres as Alejandro, a young El Salvadoran artist trying to acquire a work visa and realize his dreams in New York City. Shirley calls it “a fantastically surreal and imaginative film” with “a singular voice behind it.”

Bottoms (August 25)

Shirley declares this summer “the summer of Ayo Edibiri,” who plays Sydney in the Hulu show The Bear and is one of the stars of the raunchy high school comedy Bottoms. It’s about two queer teens who start a fight club in the hopes of meeting hot cheerleaders. Shirley says this would have been her “entire personality” if this movie had come out when she was in high school, it’s that good.

What to eat:

Grilled Corn Tiger Salad

This recipe is a spin on a Chinese tiger salad that incorporates elements of Mexican-style elote. It’s a mix of cilantro, cucumbers, and peppers with soy sauce and chili crisp. “It just blew my mind,” Shilpa says.

Lemony Zucchini with Sour Cream and Dill

This recipe pairs blistered zucchini with a lemony vinaigrette and sour cream dip. “It’s refreshing and unexpected,” Shilpa says. “It’s the sort of vegetable recipe that feels meaty.”

Free Form Kebabs

Skip the skewers and throw these kebabs right on the grill. You can use either ground lamb or beef, which is then mixed with “heaps of sumac,” the lemon-like spice. Shilpa calls this recipe “summer eating at its best.”
