“Chicago is trying to make the most out of its reputation as ""The Windy City"" and plans to add several wind turbines to a downtown building later this year.

Mayor Richard Daley envisions a city skyline dotted with small wind turbines. To that end, the city’s placing four of them atop the Daley Center. They’ll be 31 stories above busy downtown streets.

Bill Becker heads the local company that will build them. He wants to prove his machines can work that high off the ground.

""If it works, it will start whole new thinking with architects and engineers. That you could start to design buildings with wind power as an inherent part,"" he says.

Becker says the turbines will supply less than three percent of the building’s power.

But the city says the project is more about logistics than raw wattage. Officials want to work out several kinks before more turbines get deployed across the city. For example, they want to know whether winter ice could fall from turbines onto streets, and people, below.“
