Residents of an affordable housing complex in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood are declaring a small victory in their struggle to keep their complex from being shut down. The U.S. Housing and Urban development has wanted to foreclose the property and give tenants vouchers to move elsewhere, but residents resisted.

Situated just south of the University of Chicago, Grove Parc Apartments provides housing for low- and moderate-income families.

The U.S. Housing and Urban Development has wanted to foreclose the property to redevelop a mixed-income complex.

Now, a Boston-based group called Preservation of Affordable Housing, or POAH, has taken over management of the 504 units.

The nonprofit wants to eventually own the property on South Cottage Grove. Starting next week, inspectors will examine every apartment. Many are in disrepair. POAH will then determine if repairs are too costly.

Meanwhile, HUD is considering the Boston group’s proposal for redevelopment of Grove Parc. It’s in a neighborhood that’s fast-changing and losing affordable housing. Residents are hoping POAH’s involvement will mean they can stay in the community.
