Chicago police officials have released a blueprint of reforms the department will undertake to battle crime and combat the distrust facing it in some neighborhoods.
The department on Tuesday issued its “Next Steps for Reform,” which promotes better training of officers, an increased use of community policing, improved manpower and supervision, and a revision of its use of force policies.
Officials said the planned reforms will mean more effective policing and help the department address violence in high crime areas.
Many residents have questioned Chicago policing after violence hit a 19-year high in 2016 with 762 homicides.
Trust in the department was hurt by the release in 2015 of a video showing a white police officer shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times. The officer is charged with first-degree murder.
