The very first LatiNxt festival is coming to Chicago this month. It highlights several rising artists across Latin America who use modern techniques, but traditional sounds. Almost two dozen acts will perform at free open-air venues around Navy Pier. Catalina Maria Johnson is host and producer of Beat Latino on WBEZ’s sister station, Vocalo. She’s excited about this year’s lineup, which includes a Puerto Rican electronic artist who practices Nigerian indigenous religion, an Afrobeat DJ from Cuba, and a Canadian artist inspired by Afro-Colombian chanting.
