On September 1, 2004, armed Islamic militants stormed a school in Beslan, North Ossetia, an autonomous republic in Russia. The terrorists took hostage of over 1,100 people, including 777 children. After a three-day standoff, Russian security forces launched a rescue operation. When the dust settled, 334 people were dead, including 186 children. To commemorate, Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) in collaboration with BRONKS, a Brussels-based theater group, presents “Us/Them.” The producers describe the performance as “not a recounting of the tragedy, but rather a stunning, intricately choreographed exploration of … [how] young people cope with extreme situations … [as] told through the eyes of a young girl and boy.” We’ll talk about this artistic expression of the Beslan School tragedy with performers Gytha Parmentier and Roman Van Houtven.
